Stage boundaries, global stratigraphy, and the time scale: towards a simplification

International audience; This paper examines four facets of stratigraphic terminology and usage considered faulty and proposes corrective measures. The four perfectible areas are: (1) The system of dual nomenclature requiring discrete terminologies for the superpositional and temporal aspects of rock units. (2) The premise that a GSSP establishes the base of a stage as being coincident with the top of the preceding stage rather than simply defining it as the boundary between stages. Givetian (Middle Devonian) historical bio- and chronostratigraphical subdivision based on conodonts

The conodont record supports the intended threefold subdivision of the Givetian as envisaged by the International Subcommision on Devonian Stratigraphy into Lower, Middle and Upper Givetian substages. The lower boundary of the Lower Givetian Stage coincides with the lower boundary of the Givetian and it is recognized with the entry of Polygnathus hemiansatus. The lower boundary of the Middle Givetian is identified with the entry of either P. varcus or P. rhenanus. The base of the Upper Givetian is defined with the entry of Schmidtognathus hermanni. Jurassic evolution of the Arabian carbonate platform edge in the central Oman Mountains

International audience; The Jurassic Sahtan Group exposed in northern Oman was deposited in shallow marine environments at the edge of the Arabian Platform facing the Neo-Tethys (Hamrat Duru Basin). The upper Sahtan Group is made up of a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate unit overlain by pure carbonate deposits, assigned to a Bathonian and Early Callovian age on the basis of brachiopods and foraminifers. These carbonate depositional systems were composed of outer oolitic shoals that underwent subaerial exposure, and a deeper, somewhat restricted, gently dipping shelf interior. Geochemistry and origin of ultramafic enclaves and their basanitic host rock from Kula Volcano, Turkey

Abstract The Quaternary Kula Volcanic Province is located in western Anatolia, Turkey. This Na-alkaline anorogenic volcanism includes exposures of around 80 cinder cones, lava flows, and tuffs, representing one of the youngest volcanic activities in this region (1.9–0.026 Ma). The magmatism is related to an extensional regime and is interpreted as being derived predominantly from the asthenospheric mantle. The lava flows are mostly of a basanitic composition and host rare comagmatic enclaves. The enclaves are composed of two dominant lithologies: amphibolites and clinopyroxenites with and without olivine. Amphibole is usually resorbed and replaced by a rhoenite-rich breakdown corona. Fault bound blocks of granulite and enderbite occur within upper amphibolite-facies migmatitic tonalitic-trondhjemitic-granodioritic (TTG) gneisses of the Iisalmi block of Central Finland. These units record reworking and partial melting of different levels of the Archean crust during a major tectonothermal event at 2·6-2·7 Ga. Anhydrous mineral assemblages and tonalitic melts in the granulites formed as a result of hydrous phase breakdown melting reactions involving amphibole at peak metamorphic conditions of 8-11 kbar and 750-900°C. The “Libeccio Antico” was, among the “marbles”, the most appreciated ornamental stone during the Baroque Age (the XVII–XVIII centuries), due to its strong polychrome contrasts from ivory to yellow, green or dark red. Abstract A single polycrystalline diamond aggregate from the Orapa kimberlite (Botswana) contains a syngenetic micro- and nano-inclusion suite of magnetite, pyrrhotite, omphacite, garnet, rutile and C–O–H fluid in order of abundance. This suite of inclusions is distinctly different from those in fibrous diamonds, although the presence of sub-micrometer fluid inclusions provides evidence for a similarly important role of fluids in the genesis of polycrystalline diamond. Natural water reservoirs are very valuable floristic sites, with springs particularly important for the preservation of floral biodiversity. This paper presents, as a case study, a community of water plants that is new to limnocrene karst springs in Europe: Potametum alpini (Potametea), found in Poland. Metamorphic and structural evolution of the Maures-Tanneron massif (SE Variscan chain): evidence of doming along a transpressional margin

AbstractThe Variscan metamorphic and structural evolution of the Maures-Tanneron massif is divided in two main post-collisional phases: (1) a MP-MT regional gradient is developed during nappe-piling process between 350 and 320 Ma, followed by (2) LP-HT regional gradient coeval with doming between 320 and 300 Ma. During this late phase, the tectonic context was dominated by E-W shortening, which produced crustal-scale upright folds and major strike-slip displacement along trans-crustal faults.
